About FOSTUR
Our Mission:
- Conservation of coastal marine wildlife and ecosystems
- STEM education in coastal community schools.
- Direct engagement with coastal communities.
FOSTUR (Friends of Sea Turtles) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to turning the tide for sea turtles and marine ecosystems through hands-on education, scientific research, conservation action, and community engagement. Based in Costa Rica and working in some of the most ecologically significant coastal regions of the Eastern Pacific, FOSTUR bridges science, technology, and local participation to protect marine life while training the next generation of conservation leaders.
Sea turtles are critical indicators of ocean health, yet they face increasing threats from climate change, habitat loss, poaching, fisheries bycatch, and coastal development. FOSTUR was created to address these challenges through innovative, science-driven solutions that combine field-based conservation with modern technology and education.
Our Approach
FOSTUR operates at the intersection of conservation science, STEM education, and community involvement. Our programs are designed to produce measurable conservation outcomes while creating meaningful learning opportunities for students, researchers, and local communities.
Hands-On STEM Education
We provide experiential learning opportunities for students interested in biology, engineering, data science, and environmental technology. Through internships, capstone projects, and fieldwork, participants contribute directly to real conservation challenges—developing tools such as temperature monitoring systems, mobile applications, data platforms, and research technologies used in active sea turtle conservation.
Scientific Research & Innovation
Our research initiatives focus on both nesting beach conservation and in-water monitoring, generating critical data on sea turtle populations, hatchling success, sex ratios, movement patterns, and habitat use. By integrating technology into conservation—such as sensors, mobile data collection, and emerging monitoring tools—FOSTUR continuously improves the accuracy, efficiency, and impact of its research.
Marine Conservation in Action
FOSTUR supports on-the-ground conservation efforts including nest protection, hatchery management, beach monitoring, and responsible data collection in compliance with national research permits. Our work directly contributes to the long-term protection of endangered sea turtle species and the ecosystems they depend on.
Community Engagement & Capacity Building
Lasting conservation requires local support. FOSTUR works closely with coastal communities, schools, and partner organizations to promote environmental education, sustainable practices, and shared stewardship of marine resources. By engaging local stakeholders, we help ensure that conservation benefits both wildlife and people.
Our Vision
We envision healthy oceans where sea turtles thrive, coastal communities are empowered, and education and innovation drive conservation forward. Through collaboration, research, and education, FOSTUR is committed to building a future where marine ecosystems are protected for generations to come.
Turning the Tide—Together
Whether through scientific research, student mentorship, community programs, or hands-on conservation, FOSTUR believes that meaningful change happens when people are connected to purpose. Together with students, researchers, volunteers, and community partners, we are turning the tide for sea turtles and marine life.
